Did you know that exposure to sunlight is essential for human health?

Exposure to sunlight and the beneficial effects of solar rays is fundamental for the human body, which is thereby able to activate vitamin D. This vitamin is crucial for calcium absorption in the bones, helping to strengthen them and prevent osteoporosis.

Furthermore, exposure to sunlight enables the body to produce melatonin, a hormone responsible for regulating the sleep-wake cycle, and serotonin, a hormone associated with mood regulation.

Finally, for individuals affected by atopic dermatitis, sunlight exposure can lead to a significant improvement in symptoms.

However, caution is required regarding how long one is exposed to the sun

Sunlight can also pose a serious threat to health if the skin is not properly protected, potentially causing severe damage. The tanning process is the body’s natural defense mechanism, creating a protective superficial layer to better shield the more delicate and deeper skin cells.

How to help the skin effectively defend itself from the sun

To support our body in this protective function, it is essential to adopt two concurrent strategies for the health of our skin:

External Protection:

– Using sunscreen filters in the form of creams suitable for one’s skin type

– Avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day

Internal Reinforcement:

– Adequately hydrating the body, not only by drinking water but also by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables

– Supplementing intake of vitamin A (which protects against UV-induced damage) and vitamin E (which combats free radicals and prevents skin aging)

– Taking essential fatty acids, which are not synthesized by the body and play a crucial anti-inflammatory role and protect against photo-aging
