Dust Mites

Did you know that dust mites are the most common source of allergies in our homes?

A dust mite is an arthropod measuring about one-third of a millimeter, not visible to the human eye. They thrive at a temperature around 20-25 degrees and in environments with high humidity levels.

There are 15 different species of dust mites, all of them fitting so well to domestic environment. They feed on the small flakes of human skin that our bodies shed daily, which can be found throughout our home, especially in mattresses, sheets, blankets, carpets, and stuffed animals. On average, an adult can shed up to 1.5 grams of skin per day, a quantity sufficient to feed a million dust mites.

Environmental Remediation

Did you know that there is no reliable and effective method to completely eliminate dust mites from our house?

There are no vacuum cleaners, acaricides, or cleaning methods that can eradicate them entirely.

Their dispersion can be contained through environmental remediation, such as the use of tightly woven mattress and pillow covers.

The adoption of certain behaviors is also helpful in controlling dust mite dispersion in the domestic environment and significantly reducing symptoms.

Allergy

Dust mites are one of the primary causes of atopic sensitization and allergic diseases worldwide, with significant incidence in Western countries. When they encounter the epithelium of the eyes, nose, lower airways, skin, and intestine, dust mite particles containing allergens can induce sensitization and atopic symptoms in those organs.

Clinical conditions resulting from sensitization and exposure to dust mites include rhinitis, sinusitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, and atopic dermatitis.

Furthermore, they significantly worsen atopic dermatitis and eczema: skin barrier integrity must be supported through abundant and continuous hydration to prevent the “allergic march” (development of rhinitis and allergic asthma in patients with atopic dermatitis).

Our advices

Atopic dermatitis

Dust mite particles, containing allergens, coming into contact with the skin epithelium can induce sensitization and atopic symptoms.

Mite allergy manifests itself on the skin with the common symptoms of atopic dermatitis: inflammation, pain and itching.

A healthy skin barrier is structured like the foundations of a house: the keratinocytes represent the bricks and the physiological lipids the cement that holds them together: in a situation of balance this structure is solid and manages to protect the entire organism from external attacks. In case of atopy, however, the lipid cement is lost and the surface is more permeable. In this way the allergens penetrate and give rise to atopic dermatitis. This pathology normally arises in the first months of life, with a significant impact on the newborn’s quality of life and sleep. The causes can be both environmental and genetic, in fact the newborn who has a parent or sibling with atopic dermatitis has a 60% chance of developing it during the first years of life, while if both parents are affected, the probability increases to 80%. It is clear that the determining factor is familiarity, although environmental factors, such as mite sensitisation, also play a key role.

The compromise of the barrier function of the skin predisposes the body to greater absorption of allergens with consequent appearance of other allergic diseases, often affecting the airways, such as rhinitis and asthma. It is of fundamental importance to maintain skin integrity as much as possible to reduce the so-called “allergic march”.  To do this, it is advisable to use third generation emollients, containing physiological lipids (such as cholesterol, ceramides and fatty acids), capable of restoring the integrity of the barrier and replenishing the lipids constituting the stratum corneum.

Main symptoms of mite allergy
  • Sneezing
  • Rhinorrhea
  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • Stuffy nose
  • Itching in the nose, mouth or throat
  • Itchy skin
  • Post-nasal drip (a flow of mucus from behind the nose into the throat)
  • Cough
Some good habits
  • Using covers for mattresses, pillows and quilts with suitable anti-mite covers, with zips: they create an effective barrier and “trap” dust mites.
  • Washing the covers only 2-3 times a year, unless strictly necessary, and ventilate the room for at least 20 minutes after removal.
  • Using also covers for all other beds in the allergy sufferer’s room.
  • Changing sheets and pillowcases weekly and wash them with hot water (>60°C).
  • Removing woolen covers, plush toys and carpets in the room from the bed: they are ideal environments for the mite.
  • Avoiding humidifiers and preferring a dry environment. Airing the room often.
  • Vacuuming carpets weekly, remembering that this process increases the concentration of allergens in the air for at least 20 minutes. It is therefore necessary to ventilate the environment well during and immediately after cleaning the carpets.
