Vitamin E is a lipophilic antioxidant molecule. Its primary function is to protect cellular membranes from oxidative stress, which is responsible for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including both neurodegenerative and immune-mediated diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

These two chronic inflammatory skin disorders share a common immune-mediated origin and are characterized by symptoms such as burning, inflammation, and itching. Numerous studies have demonstrated the involvement of oxidative stress in the development of immune-mediated diseases, including those mentioned above.

Why use vitamin E?

Vitamin E, also known as tocopherol or tocotrienol depending on its natural form, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

A recent study [1] demonstrated the efficacy and safety of Vitamin E for topical use. Specifically, a moisturizing formulation containing tocotrienol was applied directly to the skin of children affected by atopic dermatitis over a 12-week period.

The study found that the cream reduced the intensity of itching, improved trans epidermal water loss (TEWL), and consequently alleviated skin dehydration. Furthermore, there was a reduction in the use of corticosteroid creams and an overall improvement in the patients’ quality of life.
