Skin and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of profound transformation for a woman’s body, with significant effects on the skin as well. These dermatological changes are primarily driven by the hormonal imbalances typical of this stage in a woman’s life.

Such changes influence sebum production, blood circulation, and skin pigmentation. It is essential to care for the skin using gentle, targeted dermatological products in order to address the potential issues that may arise over the course of these nine months.

Hormonal Changes and the Skin

During pregnancy, the skin undergoes a series of modifications due to increased levels of estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal shift can lead to heightened sebum production—beneficial in some cases, as certain women may experience better skin hydration—but may also result in a greater tendency toward skin conditions such as acne and breakouts.

Skin Pigmentation and “Pregnancy Mask”

A common change experienced by pregnant women is hyperpigmentation. Many develop dark spots on the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin, a condition known as “melasma” or the “Pregnancy Mask .” This phenomenon is caused by increased melanin production and typically improves after childbirth, though it is strongly recommended to protect the skin from UV exposure throughout the duration of the pregnancy.

Skin Sensitivity and Dryness

During pregnancy, the skin may also become more sensitive, with a greater tendency toward dryness, irritation, or itching. The use of specific moisturizing creams containing fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin complexes can help keep the skin soft and well hydrated.

It remains crucial to select products with a suitable safety profile—preferably those registered as medical devices and free of harsh substances that could irritate or harm the skin during this delicate period.
