Mattress Mites: Practical Advice

Sleep disturbances are often associated with allergic rhinitis or itching caused by mite allergies. These dust allergens infiltrate our home environment, negatively impacting both the quality of sleep and the overall well-being of affected individuals.
Among the most common symptoms, allergic rhinitis disrupts the sleep-wake cycle. During the REM phase, crucial brain processes occur involving memory, overall rest, cognition, and dreaming. Frequent nighttime awakenings can increase general stress levels, agitation, and reduce daytime concentration.
Good sleep is also essential for proper growth. During the early hours of nighttime sleep, somatotropin—the growth hormone—is produced. For example, during school age, sleep enables children to consolidate new information, develop creativity, and enhance attention and concentration.
Continuous exposure to dust mites may accelerate the so-called “allergic march,” potentially leading to the onset of bronchial asthma.

Environmental remediation remains one of the most effective methods to counteract the presence of mites in our homes.
Some simple guidelines to follow at home or while traveling:
Use pillow and mattress covers with a dense weave and zipper closure, capable of preventing mite dispersion in the bedroom.
Cover all beds in the room, including those used by non-allergic individuals.
Remove stuffed toys and carpets.
Vacuum frequently and ventilate the room for at least 20 minutes afterward.
Avoid using humidifiers; prefer a dry environment.
Wash bed linens weekly at high temperatures (above 60 degrees Celsius).
