Radiotherapy: skin side effects

Radiotherapy-induced skin lesions represent a common challenge in oncological patients. However, there are therapeutic approaches available to mitigate cutaneous side effects and improve patients’ quality of life.
Hydration and Emollient Creams:
Consistent skin hydration is essential in managing radiotherapy-induced skin lesions. The use of emollient creams is recommended both as a preventive measure and for treating skin dryness, with particular attention to selecting gentle products free of irritants. Preference should be given to third-generation emollients containing physiological lipids capable of restoring the normal skin barrier.
Topical Therapies:
The use of third-generation emollients containing physiological lipids is advised to restore the skin’s natural barrier. Topical therapies based on essential fatty acids can reduce inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate itching associated with skin lesions.
Use of Bandages and Protective Dressings:
The application of bandages and protective dressings is beneficial in the treatment of skin ulcers. These devices help reduce friction and protect the skin throughout the radiotherapy treatment period.
Pain Management:
Effective pain management associated with skin lesions is crucial for patient well-being. This is typically addressed with standard analgesics as recommended by the physician. Advanced therapies, such as laser treatment and shockwave therapy, are emerging as promising options for managing cutaneous lesions.
Psychological and Psychosocial Support:
Acknowledging the psychological impact of skin lesions is essential. Incorporating psychological and psychosocial support into care plans can enhance patients’ emotional adaptation.
The management of radiotherapy-induced skin lesions requires a multifactorial approach and increasingly personalized care, aiming to reduce discomfort, promote healing, and ultimately improve the overall quality of life of patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment.
