Natural Antioxidants for Skin Care

Antioxidants are molecules capable of counteracting the oxidation process that occurs within cells, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), commonly known as free radicals. These free radicals can damage cells, causing particularly irreversible harm to DNA.
When the body’s natural antioxidant defenses fail to neutralize free radicals, oxidative stress ensues. This condition leads to cellular aging and increases susceptibility to the development of skin diseases, cardiovascular disorders, neurodegenerative conditions, and chronic inflammation.
Free radicals are produced both as cellular metabolic byproducts and as a result of external factors such as pollution, cigarette smoke, and prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Sources of natural antioxidants?
In nature, antioxidants are predominantly found in the foods we consume, especially fruits and vegetables, due to their high content of vitamins and bioflavonoids.
Vitamins A, C, and E are known for their protective activity on cells, as they can neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals.

Besides fruits and vegetables, these vitamins are also present in numerous legumes, whole grains, and seeds, such as hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa), which are naturally rich in antioxidant compounds.
Antioxidant molecules can be combined synergistically to enhance their effects and can also be introduced into the body through appropriate supplementation.

Benefit for skin care
Antioxidants provide a protective effect and counteract cellular inflammation resulting from prolonged sun exposure.
Both UVA and UVB rays damage cellular structures and alter the natural collagen production process carried out by fibroblasts in the dermis. Collagen protein is responsible for skin elasticity and thus contributes to the healthy, firm appearance of the skin.
This process, known as photoaging, accelerates natural aging and leads to the development of wrinkles, discoloration, loss of elasticity, and potentially more severe skin damage.
