How to Prevent Allergic March

Allergy, Skin diseases

The “allergic march” describes the typical progression often observed in allergic children..

How does one become allergic?

There are specific stages that characterize the development of allergies, beginning from early infancy.

Due to genetic predisposition or family history, at birth and within the first two years of life, atopic dermatitis may appear—a condition marked by itching and skin lesions.

The onset of these symptoms serves as a critical warning sign indicating a high likelihood that allergic manifestations will progressively worsen, much like a march. In such patients, if not treated promptly and appropriately, there is an increased risk of developing food intolerances, which can become progressively more severe. Subsequently, the probability of developing serious respiratory allergies such as asthma and rhinitis also increases.

Are there diagnostic tests to identify the likelihood of allergy development?

Unfortunately, according to current medical knowledge, no diagnostic methods can definitively predict the likelihood of developing serious allergic diseases.

However, it is established that if both parents suffer from some form of allergic condition, the probability that their children will develop similar conditions is higher, with a risk exceeding 50%.

In any case, the absence of allergic parents does not entirely eliminate the risk, as approximately 20% of infants without a family history still develop some form of allergy.

What can be done to slow down or halt the allergic march?

It is crucial that preventive measures be taken from the very first signs of atopic dermatitis by using products with strong soothing and moisturizing properties.

The early use of moisturizers capable of restoring the skin barrier can alter or reduce the likelihood of the allergic march.

It is essential to use the correct type of emollient, one that can effectively restore the skin barrier. Only third-generation emollients, characterized by the presence of essential fatty acids, ensure proper restoration of the skin barrier, even in the presence of atopic dermatitis symptoms.
