Preventing and Managing Radiodermatitis

Radiodermatitis refers to skin reactions caused by exposure to ionizing radiation. It is a significant side effect in oncology patients undergoing radiotherapy. But how can radiation dermatitis be prevented and treated?
Key Measures to follow
Per prevenirne la comparsa e limitare i danni, è utile adottare alcuni accorgimenti prima, durante e dopo il ciclo di trattamento.
Before radiotherapy: improve skin health
- Deeply hydrate the area of skin that will be affected by the treatment. Choose products with a high oil content, preferably those containing skin-supportive active ingredients such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, vitamin E, and panthenol.
- Avoid using alcohol-based products: they tend to dehydrate the skin, making it more fragile.
Do not use soaps, shampoos, cleansers, or lotions that contain fragrances, colorants, and/or potentially irritating preservatives. These ingredients can promote the onset of skin discomfort such as itching and dryness.

During radiotherapy: gently protect your skin
- Clean your skin daily using lukewarm water. This helps to remove bacteria that may lead to infection. Be especially gentle when cleansing the area receiving radiation therapy—avoid using sponges or abrasive materials.
- Use a gentle, pH-neutral cleanser. Opt for formulations that include oils. Apply the product gently with your hands and rinse with lukewarm water.
- Avoid shaving or hair removal in the treated area. This activity can irritate the skin and cause painful rashes.
- Apply a soothing and moisturizing cream several times a day. This will help the skin recover more quickly from the effects of the treatment.
- Choose loose-fitting, soft, and breathable clothing to reduce friction on the skin, especially in areas where radiation dermatitis has developed.
After radiotherapy:
- Continue to moisturize the treated area several times a day. Radiodermatitis may still occur days or even weeks after the treatment has concluded (known as delayed radiodermatitis).
- For cleansing, continue using a pH-neutral cleanser. You will reduce the risk of skin irritation and inflammatory responses.
